Product details
The complete works of Swiss Pritzker Prize winners Herzog & de Meuron now encompass around 570 buildings and projects in over 35 countries. This book presents 25 realized buildings from all periods of their work in carefully orchestrated image sequences featuring outstanding photographs by Balthasar Burkhard, Hannah Villiger, Margherita Spiluttini, Iwan Baan, Thomas Ruff, and Wolfgang Tillmans. This personal selection by the two authors includes the Ricola warehouse in Laufen, the Tate Modern in London, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, and the Parking Structure 1111 Lincoln Road in Miami, covering all central aspects of the oeuvre of these significant architects. The 25 case studies are supplemented by technical data, plans, and literature references. Two extensive introductory essays illuminate the architects' design methodology. Stanislaus von Moos focuses on concepts of perception in painting, sculpture, and photography, and their impact on Herzog & de Meuron's architectural thinking. Arthur Rüegg examines the architects' ambivalent view of the built world and shows how this perspective is reshaped from case to case based on varying starting conditions. Two areas hold a special position among the materials published for the first time in this book: the photographic works of Pierre de Meuron and the postcard collection of Jacques Herzog. These previously unexplored visual archives are directly related to the architectural production of the two architects and are compiled in separate image sections.
