Albrecht von Massow explores which existential subjects can receive abstract and thus universally understandable forms of ideal and physical or material coping with life through an artificial music that unfolds its autonomy. The first part presents music as an ideal coping mechanism for life while simultaneously maintaining an aesthetic openness towards the metaphysical, whether religious or not. In ancient Western culture, music had a complex purpose: the exploration of the human soul in interaction with historical dynamics. The second part highlights music as a confrontation with the physical or material realities of modern life. Modern music encompasses the understanding that everything arising from the material dynamics of the physical and factual, of the necessary and the superfluous in existential possibilities and pressures, can be sublimated into expression: violence, destruction, abnormality, annihilation, passion, sensuality, the mechanical, the collective, etc. Thus, music generates the knowledge that humans do not have to leave the dynamics of their reality as they exist, but that they can engage with it, that they can transform it. This book is the second of five books that address the future spaces of freedom and autonomy.
