Due to the high demand for housing in the GDR, a large number of apartments had to be created for the population in a very short time. The political guidelines provided architects with contemporary type projects, which they constructed in series throughout the GDR, aiming to solve the housing issue as a social problem. The development of industrial housing construction represents an important part of the architectural history of the GDR and is systematically explained in a catalog on housing series in the GDR, which has not been presented in this form before. Individual chapters elaborate on and describe their historical backgrounds and architectural features, starting in 1953 with the first experimental building in panel construction.
