The only almost completely preserved watchtower of the Frankfurt fortifications was located far outside the imperial city, amidst greenery. It served as a transit station for travelers and trade fair visitors and played a role in all the military conflicts that Frankfurt was drawn into over the centuries. The decisive turning point came in the 1930s when the city sold large areas of land to the Wehrmacht of the German Reich. Barracks were built around the Friedberger Warte. The watchtower itself and the buildings on the surrounding military grounds remained almost undamaged during World War II, allowing them to be taken over by American forces in 1945. The withdrawal of American troops by 1996 caused dramatic changes. From 2003 to 2012, residential neighborhoods were constructed, where about 3,000 Frankfurt residents now live. A new, quiet district has emerged with architectural variations for different population groups. Living at the Friedberger Warte is in demand due to its excellent transport connections, satisfactory infrastructure, and successful urban planning solutions.
