Fourteen-year-old Edie Mather lives with her family on Wych Farm, where the aftereffects of World War I and the Great Depression are still felt. It is the era of traditional farming: the farm is still operated with horsepower, and life in the countryside is tough. Edie is a peculiar child who prefers the company of books over that of other playmates.

When journalist Constance FitzAllen arrives from London to write about rural life, Edie feels admiration for the extroverted woman in men's trousers from the very beginning. Charming and glamorous, Constance initially seems to be the ideal friend and mentor for Edie. However, the young woman from the city does not just want to document – she wants to evangelize. And she brings political ideas that soon lead to a wildfire across Europe.
