Voigt:Verheissung und Dekadenz

The World Spa Baden-Baden became a place of longing for guests from the Tsarist Empire in the 19th century. Notably, many writers gathered here, including well-known figures such as Turgenev, Dostoevsky, Goncharov, and the Ukrainian-Russian master storyteller Gogol. Additionally, the once-famous and now almost forgotten poets Vasily Zhukovsky and Pyotr Vyazemsky, as well as the remarkable Alexandra Smirnova, left their mark. The author approaches these individuals and their works using contemporary sources and with a focus on everyday life in the fashionable spa town. In doing so, she unfolds an exciting chapter of Russian-European history that is full of discoveries and reveals surprising connections to the present.
