Jan Neruda's stories, first published in 1878, take the reader back to the dreamy Prague of the 19th century. Between the winding alleyways, proud aristocratic palaces and magnificent churches of the Lesser Town lived and strove the original characters that Neruda immortalised in the Lesser Town stories, such as the troubled Mrs Lakmus, the ageing bachelor Doctor Loukot, the charming Otylka or the irreconcilable rivals Ryánek and Schlegl. Neruda's great classic has lost none of its appeal to this day and is one of the indispensable works of Czech literature. Rating: well worth reading.
