For the ecumenical dialogue between the Eastern and Western Churches, clarifying the respective relationship between church and state is an urgent research desideratum. The study presented here aims to take a first step in this direction by engaging in dialogue through two thinkers from Eastern and Western Christianity, Vladimir Solovyov and Joseph Ratzinger. Both have made significant contributions in their own ways to a viable relationship between church and state today. Through a multi-perspective comparison of these two different approaches, a clearer understanding can be achieved, which aims to stimulate and encourage further engagement with this topic within the Catholic-Orthodox communion.
