The Nuremberg Laws of 1933 blocked many talented artists from publishing and publicly performing their works. Through exclusion, repression, and the physical annihilation of the ostracized musicians, many names and valuable works remained unknown or have completely vanished. An example of this is the life and work of Viktor Ullmann. A composer of Jewish descent, born at the end of the 19th century, he experienced tremendous technological progress, social-political changes, and World War I. New movements such as Neo-Impressionism, Symbolism, Expressionism, Naturalism, Modernism, Avant-Garde, Atonality, and Twelve-tone music left significant marks on the development of his personality. He searches for his own path as a composer and as a person. He seeks answers in religion, anthroposophy, and family. Ironically, he finds the answer in the Theresienstadt concentration camp, where he simultaneously reaches the peak of his creative output. This book is aimed at both musicologists and anyone interested in this topic.
