Family is not for the faint-hearted. Lisa once swore never to return to the ugly small town where her stuffy twin sister willingly stayed. But when Lisa's husband takes up with a younger woman, she literally crawls back with her 17-year-old daughter at the wheel in second gear. She finds a worn-out sister and a confused mother. Hannah needs a vacation, and Lisa insists she can handle it. But Ursula has Alzheimer's, and Lisa doesn't understand what she is trying to communicate. Only an old diary reveals a well-kept secret of her mother, prompting Lisa to come up with the idea of helping fate along.
