This book explores the causes of distrust and demonstrates how we can regain trust in ourselves and in life.

We all carry a wound of betrayal and disappointment within us. Often, we are not aware of it; only when life confronts us with experiences that are frustrating and unsettling—sometimes even extremely painful and destructive—does this wound reopen.

We behave according to our patterns: either we deny that we are hurt, or we fall into resignation, or we blame a person or situation and respond with bitterness and resentment. However, with these often uncomfortable experiences, life wants to awaken us. It wants to let us know that there is work waiting for us inside. It aims to give us depth and make us more human.

An important learning process for the soul can begin—the gift of life on the path to maturity. When we possess genuine trust, it does not mean that we never distrust. However, our distrust represents a response in the here and now and is based on clear, unemotional observations. This kind of clear perception allows us to make distinctions: we can open up when we feel safe and accepted, or close ourselves off when we deem it appropriate. We see the situation as it is.
