Verlassenes Land

So we stand in the cold, looking at the barriers and border fortifications at the Dorohusk crossing. Smoke is rising on the Ukrainian side, and we don't know whether it is the result of burning wood or a rocket impact. The helpers are bustling about, providing the refugees with the most basic necessities. No one should go hungry or cold here. It is not long until dusk - we are still looking for a way to get our relief supplies to the woman, man or child. A mother with her two daughters crosses the border, generously waved through by Polish border officials. She pulls a small suitcase behind her, the children beside her - bravely, braving the cold, they turn their backs on their beloved homeland to save their lives. There is probably no plan for the future. They are picked up by a man who quickly disappears with them across the street. I decide to run after them.
