Feelings are generally considered to be mental states that can be located in a hidden inner world of the subject or in their brain. This contrasts with a conception of embodiment that understands feelings as phenomena that connect self and world in a bodily resonance. From this perspective, intersubjectivity does not begin with an isolated self that must find its way to others, but rather with interaffectivity. This establishes the primary, intercorporeal relationships as well as the lasting bonds with other people. Through numerous examples of feelings such as empathy, trust, shame, hatred, and grief, Thomas Fuchs develops a new view of our affective connection with the world in his book.
