Abstract: This thesis is a theoretical analysis based on findings from empirical studies. The aim is to determine the extent to which breakfast consumption affects the cognitive performance of elementary school students. To begin with, important terms will be clarified. This will be followed by an overview of the frequency of breakfast consumption in Germany and globally. The foundation for this is national and international study results from a literature review on the breakfast habits of children and adolescents. Next, a brief discussion will cover what is typically eaten for breakfast and the quality of breakfast. After this general information, the requirements and recommendations for a breakfast suitable for school-aged children will be presented. Subsequently, the influence of nutrition on the brain will be explained, before presenting national and international study results related to breakfast and cognitive performance based on a systematic literature review. Finally, the results regarding breakfast habits and their significance for the cognitive performance of school children will be critically discussed and evaluated in terms of their validity. The objective is to assess breakfast concerning its presumed effects on the brain and the associated cognitive processes, as well as to provide an outlook for further research and the potential for promoting a regular and wholesome breakfast for students.
