Chronic prostatitis today shows a high rate of relapses and recurring pathological events despite the best pharmacological therapy. A better understanding of the pathophysiological effects of ischemic hypoxia (in pelvic and prostate tissues) and lymphatic congestion in the same body region contributes to the development of this complex condition. A strategy focused on reducing biofilm or leukocyte infiltration may be an effective way to decrease relapses and the progression of prostate disease. The biofilm is also involved in the local microenvironment of prostate cancer and is associated with a type of drug resistance.
