Kunst und Kultur der Protobulgaren im Ersten Bulgarischen Reich

The book addresses architecture, stone sculpture, and metalwork, as well as graffiti drawings and decorative arts from the early centuries of the First Bulgarian Empire, attributed to the proto-Bulgarian ethnic element. It examines monuments ranging from fortifications and secular buildings to sacred architecture. In the realm of stone sculpture, the focus is on the relief of the Rider of Madara and round sculptures of lions. The metalwork includes the treasure of Malaja Pereshcepina and finds from Voznesensk and Nagyszentmiklós. The research aims to compare the fundamental features of these artistic monuments with corresponding monuments from the regions where the proto-Bulgarians previously resided. The history of their emergence is analyzed, with a particular emphasis on the steppe areas around the Black Sea.
