Although wood has been used as a bridge construction material for centuries, the performance of wooden bridges is still questioned. In particular, the durability of a wooden structure is often doubted. This study examined existing wooden bridges in the state of Brandenburg regarding their structural wood protection. Additionally, the environmental impacts and their effects on a wooden bridge were explained, and the existing principles from the literature were compiled. The aim of this investigation was to determine the condition of the wooden bridges and the factors influencing it, in order to develop principles for future wooden bridges that ensure a long lifespan while also meeting aesthetic requirements.
