"Who takes, will be given." This is the motto of Paul Gertsch. The fifty-year-old runs a thrift store in Bern. Typically, people come with the intention of trading in their old stuff. More often than not, they leave with new items. Less frequently, individuals come to Gertsch with a special request, a request whispered in hushed tones that requires a down payment: cash in unmarked envelopes. This is how Gertsch, together with his daughter, clears out a well-monitored luxury chalet in Gstaad – the kind of family outing they both appreciate – or turns his client into the hero of a theater evening through a staged robbery, thus helping him get promoted. When the body of a nationally known entrepreneur is planted on him, Gertsch must use all his skills to keep the police at bay. The thief becomes a detective, and when it comes to solving the case, he is willing to use not only legal means.
