The monograph focuses on the postmodern interpretations of the expressionist tendency in Italian literature that emerged between 1980 and 2000. The world of contemporary culture presents differences and diversity in contrast to the old desire for uniformity, eliminates continuity in favor of randomness, prefers variety and otherness over identity and similarity, and rejects order and security in theoretical formulations. The attempt to assert that there is an aesthetic and literary movement that still persists today, which for some is nothing more than a historical phenomenon from the past, may seem like a hollow and hopelessly unrealistic rhetorical device. Precisely defining what expressionism is seems today, in times when it is so difficult and almost cumbersome to talk about an artistic or literary experiment, just as challenging as it was at the beginning of the century, in the era of historical avant-gardes. Historical avant-gardes, and thus expressionism, have long been part of the contemporary canon. Expressionist techniques of artistic expression spread and lost their transgressive character; their role and functioning within the extensive koine of postmodern literature have also changed. However, these changes do not signify a loss of significance or artistic productivity. Today's expressionism is the style and function of the text, but also a specific philosophy and vision of humanity that is constantly present in the melting pot of diversity and variety, even in today's literature, without boundaries and theoretical references.
