Beautiful wind and water mills still characterise the landscape of Schleswig-Holstein. This volume presents the current stock of wind, water and motorised mills in Schleswig-Holstein and Hamburg for the first time and documents them with numerous photos. Around 160 mill sites with preserved buildings still exist in both states. Of these, 62 windmills, 14 water mills and one motorised mill were selected. Their history and technical features are explained in detail, illustrated with over 350 historical and current photographs and drawings. The ownership structure is also traced and the commitment of the millers and the respective owners is honoured. The introductory articles deal with the development of the mills over the centuries and their various types, their importance as cultural monuments that characterise the landscape and their technical features, mention mill losses, explain the decline of the milling trade in the 20th century and list the most important mill builders.
