Author's Text
John Stuart Mill (1806 - 1873) was one of the most significant political philosophers and perhaps the most important Anglo-Saxon philosopher of the 19th century. As the main representative of utilitarianism, he focused in his work on issues of political freedom, the common good, and the limits of the state. He also wrote an early text on feminism and a discussion of the fundamental questions of political economy. He actively represented his liberal position politically and was a member of Parliament for the Whigs.

Blurb
Mill's defense of the utilitarian theory that the promotion of the general happiness is the first and only criterion of moral action is one of the most frequently discussed yet also one of the most criticized works in moral philosophy. The text, first published in 1861, is presented here as a bilingual edition, supplemented by a line-by-line commentary and an afterword.
