1. Introduction
The history of HIV in South Africa is probably the most controversial of all early affected countries. It is marked by government inaction, health-endangering interventions, pseudoscience, and conflicts between politicians, aid organizations, and scientists. After two decades of ignorant policies, South Africa stands out as the country with the highest HIV rate in the world. The first part of this paper will provide an overview of the outbreak of HIV specifically in South Africa, followed by current statistics and their classification. Then, the causes for the rapid outbreak of immunodeficiency will be highlighted, followed by the risk groups in South Africa. In the final part, South Africa's position regarding the outbreak of the disease will be discussed. It will be made clear why South Africa holds a unique status even within the Sub-Saharan region, which has a high HIV rate.
