Even though today there is hardly any indication of one of the oldest main roads in northern Germany, the significance of the Folcwech for the cultural and historical development of the northern German region cannot be overstated. Countless merchants, armies, migrants, and travel groups embarked on their journeys east or west along the unpaved Folcwech - and this has been happening since the Bronze Age. Despite its great influence and active use, there are only secure indications of the ancient road where massive Roman roads ran and where paths converged at bottlenecks. Elfriede Hornecker examines a route between Wildeshausen and Goldenstedt, based on the historical collection of Willi Schreiber, which extends through the present-day districts of Vechta and Diepholz to Nienburg. In this area, the Folcwech is suspected and partially confirmed. Numerous archaeological finds are presented for illustration, and their significance for research is explained. Hornecker vividly explains the importance and use of the Folcwech since the Bronze Age and uses brief excursions to describe the life and culture of the individual epochs and regions.
