This compendium documents the state of qualitative research on teaching. It summarizes its challenges, yields, and achievements. The volume provides an overview of central practices in teaching and highlights the connection between the guiding theories and methodologies of qualitative teaching research and their empirical results. A focus is placed on findings related to the beginnings of lessons, the coordination and differentiation in teaching, the assessment of performance, teaching and learning practices, as well as individualized and cooperative forms of teaching, student practices, and phenomena of boundary dissolution in teaching. Two fundamental questions of qualitative teaching research are presented: How is teaching theoretically defined? And what are the implications of choosing different methodologies and methods for understanding?.
