Human behavior patterns, social rules, and societal structures that we accept as universal are not actually so. And yes, some of them can be changed. There are many assumptions and beliefs circulating about what defines humanity. We always want more than we have. We are a violent species. We are driven and never have enough time. Behind these beliefs lurks the idea of "human nature."

Cultural anthropologist Bettina Ludwig turns our worldview and understanding of humanity upside down with her research. She takes us into hunter-gatherer societies, where time, possessions, and hierarchies function differently than we are used to. She explains why tracking is the primal form of science and convincingly shows that humans act primarily based on cultural influences and not "just because that's how they are." From this retrospective perspective, Ludwig develops a vision for a community where diversity is the norm, advocating for optimism and a healthy dose of realism.
