A shear wall is a vertical element designed to resist lateral forces such as wind and seismic forces acting on a building structure. It functions like a vertical cantilever beam supported at the base and, along with columns, carries the vertical load. There are essentially two arrangements: one is located at the edges of the building and can be either planar or flanged. The other is installed inside the structure as core walls or channel sections. These walls are typically found in the center of high-rise buildings in the form of a core wall system to accommodate vertical transportation systems such as elevators.
