Throughout history, the central role of women in society has ensured the stability, progress, and long-term development of nations. Worldwide, women make up 43 percent of the agricultural workforce – in some countries, this figure rises to 70 percent. In Africa, for example, 80 percent of agricultural production comes from smallholder women, most of whom live in rural areas. It is widely recognized that agriculture can be a driving force for growth and poverty alleviation in developing countries. Women, especially mothers, play the largest role in decision-making regarding meal planning and nutrition within the family. Women also more frequently report their own initiatives to maintain the health and nutrition of children. In every country in the world, women are the primary caregivers for children and the elderly. International studies show that when the economy and political organization of a society change, women take the lead in helping families adapt to new realities and challenges. They are likely to be the main initiators of external assistance and play a crucial role in facilitating or hindering changes in family life.
