The Kenyan construction sector is one of the fastest-growing industries, with an average growth rate of 14.2% from 2006 to 2011. In the same period, Kenya's economic growth, measured by real Gross Domestic Product (GDP), averaged only 4.3%, declining from 6.33% in 2006 to 4.38% in 2011. Currently, there are six manufacturers in the industry: East African Portland Cement Company, Bamburi Cement Ltd, Athi River Mining, Cemtech, National Cement, and Pandlu Cement. According to the Central Bank's monthly economic report for 2012, cement consumption increased by an average of 14.1% from 2006 to 2011, with consumption reaching 3.43 million tons in 2011, compared to 1.57 million tons in 2006.
