Product details

In 13 chronologically arranged essays, radical political activist Angela Davis traces the development of the American women's liberation movement from the 1960s to the time of the book's publication (1981) and connects it to the history of Black women in the USA—from slavery to the injustices of the present. Although the end of slavery followed the American Civil War, racism was not overcome. Black people were granted citizenship, but as second-class citizens. Angela Davis critically examines how the struggle for Black civil rights intertwined with the struggles of white women for education, voting rights, and equality. The author argues that the white women's movement has never understood the needs of the Black community and explains why Black women in the USA approach the central issues of feminism—such as career choices, union organizing, sexual equality, birth control and reproductive freedom, violence, and domestic and care work—differently than their white sisters, due to class and racism.
