Far-reaching social advancement is rare, even in academia. But how can such advancements be explained sociologically and what are the experiences of professors from lower classes of origin? Frerk Blome explores these questions in a comparative study of academic careers in law and education using autobiographical narrative interviews with university professors of contrasting class origins. In doing so, he turns to a subject that has hardly been studied, because although the university professorship is considered a key position in higher education, it has hardly been studied so far with regard to class-specific inequalities and upward social mobility.
