The treatment of sickle cell anemia has improved significantly in recent years, particularly through the use of hydroxyurea. However, much still needs to be done for early diagnosis and newborn screening in developing countries. Globally, we are becoming increasingly aware of the issues related to sickle cell anemia. But where are the resources to address this? There are slow but steady advancements. The problem we are dealing with is clearly complex and difficult to tackle. I attended the 3rd World Congress in India and was impressed by the growing awareness and the discovery of a number of dedicated individuals trying to make a difference.
