What visual policies of the familial shape the imagery of the magazine "Schöner Wohnen"? Between image and text, the ideal of the heteronormative nuclear family is perpetuated. At the same time, since the 1960s, the family has become a site for socio-political reordering processes that challenge the conventional, stemming from feminist interventions into the private sphere, and are reflected in the magazine's display. Rosanna Umbach critically examines the ambivalent simultaneities of the visual discourses surrounding living, gender, and family, illustrating how they oscillate between emancipation and single-family homes, space-age kitchens and democratic living rooms, rationalization and sexual revolution.
