ALWAYS A NEW COUNTRY: SISONKE MSIMANG FIGHTS FOR EQUALITY, INDEPENDENCE AND HER RIGHT TO A PLACE IN THE WORLD.
SISONKE MSIMANG IS A CHILD OF FREEDOM
Sisonke Msimang and her siblings are born into a REVOLUTIONARY COMMUNITY fighting against APARTHEID and for an INDEPENDENT SOUTH AFRICA. "Home" is for a long time the dream of freedom and not a specific place: she is born in EXILE, grows up in SWAZILAND, SAMBIA, NAIROBI and CANADA, studies in the USA. When she enters South Africa for the first time, she is already over 20 years old. What about FREEDOM and EQUAL RIGHTS there today? WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE DREAM that kept Sisonke Msimang and her fellow fighters going during the years of exile? And the author herself? As a child, she is surrounded by women who don't give a damn about the rules that have been made up for them. They inspire and encourage Sisonke Msimang to BE THE WOMAN SHE WANTS TO BE. Has she succeeded in doing so? And what meaning do home and belonging have for her today?
NO SHYING AWAY FROM UNCOMPROMISING AND PAINFUL SELF-REFLECTION
Sisonke Msimang tells of HOPE and TRUST, of DISAPPOINTMENT - of herself, of her HEROES - and what this does to her self-image and identity. About how strength makes her grow and makes the world a little better. But also about what the compulsion to always be strong and to always evolve demands from her. She QUESTIONED HERSELF WITH GREAT OPENNESS, always putting herself together anew - in order to never again have the feeling of needing idols. In the end - in all her versatility and contradictions - to be the HERO OF HER OWN STORY. She writes of the desire to be able to take her five-year-old self from back then in her arms, to tell him: YOU CAN SURVIVE ANYTHING AND BE STRONGER AND HAPPIER THAN YOU IMAGINE THAT AT THE SILL OF EVERY NEW COUNTRY.
