The GRU, the Russian military intelligence agency, is one of the most effective and secretive intelligence services in the world. To this day, there is little verified information about the GRU in the West, primarily because very few documents from the GRU archives are accessible even now. This book presents the history of the GRU from its founding in 1918 to the present for a broad readership for the first time. Matthias Uhl has access to documents from the legendary archive of the military intelligence agency. Additionally, he reveals the identity of the GRU agent "Murat," who delivered hundreds of highly classified documents from NATO headquarters to Moscow in the 1950s and 1960s. He sheds light on operations and espionage activities during the Cold War and in today's Russia, including assassination attempts in Western Europe as well as the GRU's involvement in the annexation of Crimea and the Ukraine war.
