Cologne, 1941: Anna is raised by her aunt Marie and uncle Matthias, a bakery couple. The girl loves the bakery above all, especially the large oven made of volcanic stone. But with the war comes misfortune: Matthias is drafted, and the bakery is destroyed in air raids. While Cologne lies in ruins and is plagued by the coldest winter of the century, Anna, in her desperation, joins a black market gang and rises to become the city's most cunning coal thief. Just when she least expects it, she falls in love – a forbidden romance with dangerous consequences. Threatened by cold, hunger, and envious rivals, Anna and her aunt desperately cling to the dream of rebuilding the bakery. And to the hope that the men they love will someday return to them.
