Product details

Sculptor Peter Lenk has created a monument in protest against the Stuttgart 21 railway project. The sculpture "Stuttgart 21 – The Monument" was mounted and unveiled in Stuttgart in front of the Stadtpalais at Charlottenplatz on the night of October 26 to 27, 2020. "The Chronicle of a Grotesque Derailment" depicts figures from politics, supporters, and critics. The central figure is Winfried Kretschmann, the Minister President of Baden-Württemberg. Except for a fig leaf, the concrete-cast Kretschmann is naked. As the "Swabian Laocoön," he struggles with a snake-like ICE train. Surrounding Kretschmann are more or less naked cherubs, including former Minister Presidents and Chancellor Angela Merkel. The pedestal features bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the history of the station protests – demonstrators, police officers, tree protectors. After several months of disputes in 2021 regarding the final location of the sculpture in Stuttgart, the city ultimately planned to place it in the Europa Quarter behind the new main train station. In response, Peter Lenk decided to transport it back to Lake Constance in Bodman. Since mid-2021, it has been on display in Lenk's sculpture garden there, accessible to the public. The book is a chronology from Peter Lenk's perspective, detailing the journey from the idea to the sculpture, its dismantling in Stuttgart, and its return to Bodman. The foreword was written by Edzard Reuter.
