Product details

People with Down syndrome perceive things differently than those without this genetic variation. They tend to overlook details more often. As a result, they rely more on suitable abstractions (letters, gestures, mathematical symbols, etc.) than other individuals. The concrete, step-by-step, and abstraction-avoiding teaching methods used in special education schools take these neuropsychological peculiarities into account only to a limited extent and can even be counterproductive. The same applies to the existing teaching and learning methods, which have so far inadequately considered these attention-related characteristics. They need to be rethought in order to further develop what has only been achieved in a few remarkable individual cases: normal educational pathways for people with Down syndrome, all the way to university degrees. André Frank Zimpel summarizes this based on a large-scale study.
