Hamburg 1957: The 20-year-old Klara Paulsen applies for a position as an office worker at the women's magazine "Claire." Her father has fallen in the war, and Klara supports herself and her mother by working as a temporary assistant in a photo studio. She wants a proper job, but the HR department of the publishing house turns her down. Just then, fate comes to her aid: no one is available to develop the photos for the next issue. Klara spontaneously takes over and is hired as a photo assistant. She is overjoyed and cannot imagine that this will be the beginning of a whole new, exciting life. However, she must constantly defend herself against intrigues. Only the shy photographer Heinz Hertig is kind to her, and soon the two share more than just their profession.
