The author embarks on a quest to uncover the origins of panic disorders, depression, psychoses, or personality disorders. The concepts of attachment, trauma, and the method of family constellations have proven to be helpful in this endeavor. The innovative core idea is that mental health issues arise within relational systems characterized by their complex communication and interaction dynamics. For instance, a mother who has experienced trauma will pass this experience on to her child in one form or another. Family constellations – the method of representing relational structures within families through representatives – illustrate how early childhood relationship patterns continue into later relationships and may even trigger further traumatizations. This creates a vicious cycle from trauma to attachment disorder.
