There is a strong trend in photovoltaic inverter technology to use transformerless topologies to achieve higher efficiencies combined with very low leakage currents. Here, a new topology is proposed based on the H-bridge with a new AC bypass circuit consisting of a diode rectifier and a switch with clamping to the DC midpoint. This topology offers a high conversion efficiency and achieves a low leakage current. This also reduces space requirements and can decrease overall weight since no transformer is used. The efficiency of commercial PV panels is around 15-20%. Therefore, it is very important that the power generated by these modules is not wasted by inefficient power electronics systems. The efficiency and reliability of both single-phase and three-phase PV inverter systems can be improved through the use of transformerless topologies, but new issues related to leakage current and safety must be addressed.
