After decades of apparent stability, Europe has recently stumbled from crisis to crisis. This reveals the consequences of a one-sided approach to history that, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, linked post-fascist and post-socialist narratives into a Western capitalist success story, while colonial pasts were left unaddressed. Fatima El-Tayeb illustrates the effects of this process through the example of German identity: Racialized groups—particularly Black people, Roma, and Muslims—are repeatedly constructed as "un-German," as groups that not only do not belong to the national community but also threaten it with their presence. Therefore, a post-migrant Germany needs not only new visions for the future but also new narratives of the past.
