Symbolic forms

As disasters increase, modern, technically and scientifically organized societies must turn to fundamental questions. How was it possible for more complex societies to stabilize relatively well in an overall uncertain environment without exact sciences and instrumental technology? What is going wrong when this seems to be increasingly difficult today? Can fundamental patterns be identified that make societies more vulnerable to disasters? The category of symbolic form can be used to address these questions and derive some elements for their answers. The symbolic is the moment through which humans have always coordinated with their environment. The rise in disaster phenomena horrifically points to this category that has been repressed in modernity.
