From a media economic perspective, computer games have long been a mass medium; however, in societal perception, they are still predominantly viewed as toys primarily for young men. In Germany, nearly 50 percent of the population plays regularly, and of these, about 45 percent are female players. Based on this discrepancy between societal prevalence and perception, Sabine Hahn focuses on female players from a cultural studies perspective while also examining the behind-the-scenes aspects of the games industry from a media sociological and communication studies perspective.
