Growing up between Swiss fears of foreign influence and diasporic nostalgia: "second-generation Indians" have little narrative for their experience of multiple belonging. Rohit Jain traces how these "impossible" subjects invent new life designs amidst assimilatory racism and commodity-based recognition in Switzerland and the diasporic spaces of a liberalized India. The transnational ethnography shows how, at the postcolonial intersection of decentralized capitalism, flexible citizenship, and global popular culture, cosmopolitan life is negotiated in the tension between freedom, recognition, and exclusion.
