Training of emergency services - enabling the acquisition of skills

A hands-on approach to teaching that thrives on competency acquisition allows students and trainees to develop skills and abilities to solve problems—not through frontal instruction by trainers, but through practice on equipment, vehicles, and "patients," as well as in real-life learning situations. Because learning experience is like operational experience: merely being present does not equate to experience. Competency acquisition is the focus of training for emergency responders from fire departments, rescue services, and aid and disaster relief organizations, which the author aims to elucidate. He presents methods for engaging teaching and offers tips for improving teacher behavior, including the most important rule for trainers: "Keep your mouth shut as often as possible!"
