In a construction pit on the outskirts of Reykjavík, human bones are discovered. Who is the dead person buried here? Was he buried alive? Erlendur and his colleagues from the Reykjavík police are confronted with gruesome details. Piece by piece, they unravel events from the past and shed light on a human tragedy that extends into the present. While Erlendur is occupied with the horrors of earlier times, his daughter Eva Lind fights for her life in the intensive care unit.
