Tobit

The book of Tobit, transmitted in the Greek language, is considered one of the "hidden treasures" of the Old Testament. Often overlooked by theology, it has been a popular and engaging example of the "works of mercy" in the everyday piety of Jews and Christians throughout the centuries. It tells the story of a family living in Assyria after the fall of the Northern Kingdom of Israel, who experience the help of their God during a severe test of faith. They undergo the biblical experience that is programmatically summarized in the name of the main character, Tobit: "God is good." The book is designed as a novel-like instructional text for Jews in the diaspora, encouraging them to hold onto the traditions of their ancestors and to stand firm in their law despite the threats they face.
