Product details
The book describes the historical origins and the path to a revolutionary type of wonder weapons. Building on the inventions of IG Farben in the form of nitrogen synthesis, synthetic rubber production, and coal hydrogenation, it narrates how it was possible to develop a new form of energy generation that represented a kind of philosopher's stone. Germany, as is well known, was striving for absolute self-sufficiency in its raw material and energy supply during the Third Reich. Since it was too risky to achieve this self-sufficiency solely based on domestic coal, solutions were sought early on to create a second pillar for this purpose. The book also attempts to illustrate the problems faced by important researchers such as Bergius and Tropsch. Friedrich Bergius filed a patent for coal hydrogenation as early as 1913, but it was not until the 1930s, 20 years later, that this technology was realized on a large scale. It also seeks to analyze how industrial research enabled the achievement of such an ambitious goal. Based on rigorous scientific investigations pursued in industrial research at that time, it was possible to break away from the entrenched structures, particularly in aircraft construction, and to forge entirely new paths. Accordingly, the final departure from the aluminum semi-shell construction to the welded titanium structure occurred, which is only represented in current history books about 25 years later. Furthermore, it demonstrates how it was possible to move away from conventional aircraft propulsion systems. Additionally, this book describes in great detail the technical design of disc-shaped stratospheric aircraft and their counterpart, the American rocket A-16.
