Product details

The very first adventure of Tintin and Snowy. This adventure is the first that Tintin and Snowy experienced. It was first published in January 1929, and in it, Tintin travels to the Soviet Union to report on the conditions there as a journalist. The illustrations differ significantly from those in the other adventures and are only in black and white. A turbulent journey through history. Tintin engages in a cat-and-mouse game with a Soviet secret policeman and uncovers the weaknesses of communism during his travels through Russia: a crumbling economy, no free elections, and political oppression. Upon his return to Brussels at the end of the album, he is greeted with enthusiasm. Political statement or youthful folly. 'Tintin in the Land of the Soviets' is a highly political album that is firmly rooted in anti-communism. For many decades after its initial publication, this adventure was unavailable until it was finally officially reprinted in the early 1970s. It offers a fascinating insight into the contemporary perspective on the Soviet Union and is a valuable historical document. Hergé himself later referred to it as a 'youthful folly.'.
