Tiepolo und das Kostüm

The appeal of the paintings by Giambattista Tiepolo (1696–1770) lies particularly in the depiction of costumes. The heroes and heroines of his historical paintings are dressed in elaborate, luxurious, and imaginative garments. These are by no means mere decorative elements; rather, Tiepolo skillfully employs historical and orientalist clothing to visualize complex historical concepts. Through selected major works of the artist, Torsten Korte offers a new perspective on this previously overlooked aspect. His theoretical reflection on the genre of historical painting extends beyond the 18th century.
